In summer 2012 I was asked to make a portrait of John Hegarty, British advertising man and co-founder of the ad agency Bartle Bogle Hegarty for the cover of Italian Bill Magazine. I think this might have been the first time, that I tried the four color overlays for a commissioned portrait. Limiting myself to cyan, magenta, yellow and black at the beginning takes a lot of variables out of the process, and lets me concentrate on other things.
It is however quite hard to achieve likeness, not least when choosing black as a skin color. In this case things have worked out quite well I think. His white hair gives the dark face a counterpoint and is a good vehicle to bring some expressiveness into the picture. The slightly downcast look avoids a full frontal portrait – something I have found to work rarely in this style.
