This is a portrait for American author Dorothy Baker (1907-1968). Baker is sadly often overlooked as one of the great American writers of the mid 20th century. Her novels where a success at the time and her first novel “Young Man With Horn” was even adapted as a movie starring Lauren Bacall, Doris Day and Kirk Douglas.
The article in DIE ZEIT was reviewing a newly issued German translation of her 1962 novel “Cassandra at the Wedding”.
Identical twins are subject of this work and they gave me a prompt for her portrait. I wanted her to have a reflection. Furthermore as reference material I mostly had images of her as a young woman and as an elderly woman. You can see in the sketches below the young and the old Dorothy.
For the final image we decided to go with a slightly younger version.
